Description - Hostel

A modern purpose built centre located in the heart
of the Mourne Mountains, between Spelga Dam and The
Silent Valley, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Situated amidst beautiful
valleys and forests, and overlooking a dramatic coastline of cliffs and long sandy beaches.
Enjoy outdoor activities or relax in one of the most scenic and undiscovered parts of Ireland.

The Cnocnafeola Centre has accommodation for 31 people in a variety of private and shared rooms.
All bedrooms are ensuite with modern facilities and hot showers. Central heating zoned and timed for your needs. Local information pack and detailed maps have been prepared for each bedroom outlining the walks and the archaeology features of the area.

Visit this fascinating corner of Ireland steeped in history, hike theold smuggling route across the mountains, play golf , go fishing, visit scenic coastal villages or kayak, bike, even mountain board the Mournes!

The Mournes are well served with festivals each year ranging from blues to traditional music, the Festival of Fish to the Maiden of the Mournes.
Other activities include Angling, Golf, and Climbing all in the area, with a detailed information pack provided in each room.

We have just received great reviews in both The Observer Magazine 18/10/09 and also The Outsider Magazine Oct/Nov 09.
We are also one of the top rated hostels in May/June 09 on hostelworld.

Room amenities

Private en suite rooms which can either be made in to a double room or twin room for two persons. We also have one twin room which can be used for two people or single occupancy. These rooms have their own bathroom including shower. All bed linen is provided and there are tea and coffee making facilities in each room. We have two private rooms downstair which are specially catered for special needs.

All our shared rooms are also en suite with 4 beds and most suitable for a family. Rooms include shower and toilet and wash hand basin and also reading lights. This room can be either a male/female or mixed room on request.

We have one large 8 bed dorm which has its own en suite facility with a bath, shower, toilet and also wash hand basin. This room can be either a male/female or mixed room on request.

We also have a family room available with a double bed/ twin beds and also two single beds. This room is suitable for children. Cots and special chairs can be made available

How to get there

From Dublin
Follow directions for North/Belfast.
A new motorway from Dublin to Newry opened October 2007 reducing journey time to approximately 1 hour.
From Newry take the A2 to Warrenpoint, through Rostrevor and follow road for Kilkeel. After approx. 6 miles heading towards Kilkeel, there is a signpost for a left turn to Atticall. (The signpost is on the right hand side of the road pointing to a left turn, signpost also has B&B and community centre on it). Follow road for 3 miles into Atticall village, go past church shop and school on the left and the centre is also on the left immediately after the school.

From Belfast
Follow directions for Newcastle.
From Newcastle continue along coast, taking the A2 to Kilkeel. In Kilkeel continue into centre of town, on the hill just before the traffic lights there is a small road on the right signposted for Atticall (Mountain Road). Follow this road for approx. 3 miles until you come to a left turn signposted Atticall, follow road down towards village and we on the right entering the village.
If coming through the Spelga Pass from Hilltown or Castlewellan follow the road towards Kilkeel, pass Cnocnafeola Wood on the right and continue until right turn signposted Atticall. Take road down towards village and centre is on the right entering the village.

There is a local bus service from Kilkeel four times per day. Times are on our website.
Taxis cost approx £5 from Kilkeel.
Good rural transport during the summer from Newcastle.
Pick ups can be arranged when necessary
